HOLISTIC
Dentistry
Dr. Woods is one of the best holistic dentists in Southern California. Holistic dentistry (or Biological Dentistry), is an approach to dental care which considers the patient’s dental health in the context of their overall health. It is sometimes called “biological” dentistry or “bio compatible” dentistry. Holistic dentistry looks at the person as a whole to administer holistic dental treatment, rather than just a set of teeth and jaws.
The Holistic Dental Approach of Dr. Woods
According to the Top Holistic Dentist in San Diego, Dr. Paige Woods, principles of holistic dentistry must be practiced to avoid the destructive effects of dental infections and dental diseases, which can spread throughout the entire body. One should eat nutrient-dense foods, avoid root canal problems from the beginning, and avoid mercury (amalgam) fillings. If it is necessary to extract teeth, then avoid leaving the jawbone with cavitations (large holes), which can be focal points of infection. Amalgam use is avoided in holistic dentistry due to concerns about toxicity. Amalgam removal and replacement with natural-looking bonded materials is a common holistic dentistry treatment as well as a common aesthetic dentistry treatment. The mercury/amalgam is not only potentially bad for the teeth and the body, it looks unsightly and unnatural, and requires removal of much more precious tooth structure.
Tooth Colored Fillings and White Fillings:
Composite fillings are used generally to remove the cavitation, and restore the tooth, however in certain cases the patient might be allergic to the composite material. The composite is usually plastic and glass fillers, and certain percentage of people are allergic to methyl methacrylates known as (MMA). Dr Woods will need to the allergic testing prior to restoration of teeth. For a more long lasting restorations, porcelain inlays, onlays or full ceramic crowns and porcelain veneers are used. The medical history of the patient, combined with the xrays and evaluation of their occlusion determines, which material is best to use in our holistic dentistry approach.
Per Dr. Paige Woods, one of America’s Top Holistic Dentists, the more conservative the approach to salvage tooth structure, the more your teeth will last for the rest of your life.
In her Holistic Dental Practice in San Diego, Dr. Paige Woods is committed to holistic dentistry. A guiding principle is that the health of the mouth and the health of the body simply cannot be separated. Dr. Woods believes in combining the most natural approach possible with state-of-the-art technology for optimal results.
Zerconia implants and porcelain crowns not containing any metals, metal free porcelain lab fabricated inlays and onlays are some of the holistic procedures that our holistic dentist in San Diego incorporates in her office.
Which Biocompatability Testing is Recommended?
Dr. Paige woods recommends Clifford Materials Reactivity Testing (CMRT), testing which is basically a blood test, in which you will be tested for over 1800 different dental materials, and based upon the level of any allergy, or causing depression of your immune systems, those materials will be not used in your dentistry or cosmetic dentistry treatment.
There is also a hair testing, by Doctor Data testing in which helps mercury toxicity for patients who have been exposed to multiple mercury fillings.
In regards to the metals used in dental implants, Dr. Woods recommends, MELISA or Memory Lymphocyte Immunostimulation Assay Test, it is a blood test also for patients with delayed hypersensitivity, to test for dental amalgams, or any porcelain fused to metal restorations.
BPA – Free Composite Materials:
Dr. Woods recommends the composite restorations without BPA ( Bisphenol A, and Phthalates) which has caused certain allergies and possible asthma problems, on very minor populations.
Depending on the patient’s needs and desires in relation to holistic dentistry, Dr. Woods can address many significant aspects such as: the use of mercury free-fillings; material compatibility testing; innovative isolation techniques to eliminate mercury exposure; the use of oxygen; the role of nutrition in oral health; the relationship of gum disease to other physical problems; and structural components (such as TMJ, postural asymmetry, uneven bite, etc.). In our office, we look at the bio compatibility of the different tooth filling composite resins with each individual concerned.
